NATURE'S SIGNS:  WHAT IS LINE FISHING?

White pelicans hunt for fish in groups.

During the spring, when bass are spawning, you can sometimes see long lines of pelicans on Lake Houston.  They dip their bills in the water and literally herd schools of fish toward the shallow areas, where the pelicans then scoop them up easily.

This photo was taken on East End Park's Pelican Overlook trail.  It shows 42 white pelicans cooperatively fishing in this fashion.  Strangely, only white pelicans line fish; the gray ones do not.

Notice the fish in the mouth of the lead pelican.

Pelicans also frequent the inlet at Otter Point and the islands near the south trail.
