Update on Landscaping Projects at
Kingwood Entries
The KSA office has been inundated with
calls lately about "the dead
and dying trees" at the Kingwood entries on Kingwood Drive and North
Park Drive. The trees were planted by TxDOT as part of a joint KSA/
TxDOT project.
KSA representatives met with TxDOT on Thursday, June 18, to discuss
the issue. TxDOT reassured us that the trees are guaranteed and will
be replaced at no expense to us if they die. According to their
experts, many still show signs of life even though they have shed
their leaves. In fact, TxDOT contractors actually stripped leaves
off
some to reduce the stress they face from drought.
The current drought began last winter. One of the worst in 150
years,
it has stressed even mature trees. TxDOT claims it normally loses no
more than five percent of the trees it plants. This year, the agency
has experienced loss rates up to 60 percent in places.
The likelihood of survival for any trees planted in June, July and
August is very low according to TxDOT. As a result, the agency plans
to inventory our trees in September and replace - at that time - any
that have died.
This fall, TxDOT will also plant the wildflowers that will become a
feature of our entries in years to come.
Finally, TxDOT hopes to reseed the area with grass. Two torrential
downpours in April washed away most of the seed they planted. That
too
may have to wait for cooler weather to be successful.
They agency has also required its contractor to step up weeding,
since
much of the mulch which would normally suppress weed growth was
washed
away by the April rains.
Between now and September, irrigation schedules have been increased
to
the maximum that the system will support. TxDOT is also
supplementing
irrigation with water trucks.
Many residents, eager to help, have called KSA asking what they can
do. The answer is simple. Be patient and pray for rain.
